Patrick Moynihan joined the Jacksonville State staff ahead of the 2024-25 season and in his first season with Jax State, helped the Gamecocks to a 23-win mark, the second most in Division I program history.
Moynihan was a key piece of the staff that helped Jax State make a run to the CUSA title game, and secure the first NIT appearance in program history. Jax State defeated Georgia Tech 81-64 in the first round of the NIT, the program's first power conference victory since 1952-53.
Moynihan comes to Jax State following a stint as the head coach at NAIA Spartanburg Methodist College. Moynihan led the Pioneers to a 20-12 mark in his first season at the helm of the program, including a 9-7 record in conference play. Moynihan's Pioneers made an appearance in the Region 10 Atlantic District Quarterfinals, defeating Cape Fear before falling to Caldwell.
Prior to his time at Spartanburg Methodist, Moynihan was an assistant coach at Appalachian State. While there, he brought the Mountaineers to their first-ever Sun Belt Championship in the ‘20-’21 season, which was also the Mountaineer’s first NCAA appearance in over 20 years. In addition to winning a Conference Championship, Moynihan’s four years at Appalachian State boast several other accomplishments, including the best Sun Belt regular season finish in the school’s history, a 7-game win turnaround in his first year as a Mountaineer, and 4 consecutive years without a losing season.
Before becoming a Mountaineer, Moynihan spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. He played a key role in building the program into one of the most competitive teams in the Big South Conference. In his two seasons with the Blue Hose, Moynihan saw PC's win total increase by five in the ‘17- ’18 season, and in the ’18-’19 season, they won an impressive 20 games, the most wins in the school’s division 1 history. That same year The Blue Hose played in their first-ever post-season tournament, where they advanced to the quarterfinals.
Prior to Presbyterian College, Moynihan worked as a video coordinator at Troy University during the ’16-’17 season. While with the Trojans, he helped spark a 13-win improvement from the previous season, resulting in Troy’s first-ever Sun Belt Tournament championship leading to an NCAA Tournament berth. In the NCAA tournament, the Trojans were awarded a 15 seed against a Duke team led by Jayson Tatum. It was the largest single season win turnaround in school history, and it is still Troy’s only Sun Belt Championship.
Throughout his many stops, Moynihan has continuously separated himself as one of the top recruiters and player development coaches in the country. Moynihan has coached several players who have continued on to big accomplishments of their own. He coached Devontae Cacock while he was with the Atlanta Allstars, who went on to become an NBA Champion with the LA Lakers. While at Presbyterian College Moynihan coached and recruited Oklahoma City Thunder signee Adam Flagler.
Moynihan also recruited Corey Hightower to Presbyterian College, who proceeded to be named to the Big South All-Freshman Team. In his time with the Mountaineers Moynihan coached and worked interictally with Justin Forrest, who scored an impressive 2,000 points playing for the Mountaineers. He also worked closely with O’showen Williams and Isaac Johnson who both had their best collegiate year playing for Moynihan and are now currently playing professional basketball. Moynihan Coached Wesley Person Jr and Jeremy Hollimon during his time at Troy who were named to the All Sunbelt Team and All Sunbelt Tournament Team, respectively. At North Alabama he coached and recruited Dimario Jackson who was named to the All Gulf South Team.
Moynihan’s hard work has not gone unnoticed, and he boasts multiple awards at a national level. In 2020 he was named NABC Under Armour 30 Under 30 Team, which honors the 30 most outstanding coaches under the age of 30. That same year he was named to Silver Waves Media Top 50 Most Impactful Mid-Major Assistant Coaches in the country, and two years later in 2022 he was named on Silver Waves list for a second time.
Moynihan graduated from The University of North Georgia in 2013 with a degree in finance and management. Moynihan also was a four-year letterwinner on the North Georgia basketball team.
