A native of Shannon, Miss., and former guard at Auburn University, Sharp joined Green’s staff in July of 2011 after spending four years as an assistant at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fla. It will be his second stint with Green, having worked two seasons as an assistant for him at Mississippi Valley State.
“I feel like Reggie will be a great addition to not only our program, but to the Jacksonville State family,” Green said. “He is a young and energetic coach that already has good experience under his belt. His connections throughout not only the state, but across the southeast, will be a big asset for our program, and having worked with me before at Mississippi Valley will make the transition an easy one.”
He comes to JSU from FAMU, where he served as the Rattlers’ Associate Head Coach. Under head coach Eugene Harris, Sharp was primarily in charge of the Rattler guards. He went to Tallahassee with Harris in 2007 from MVSU in Itta Bena, Miss., after helping Green and the Delta Devils win the 2007 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship and earn a bid to the NIT.
“I am excited about joining the Gamecocks program and feel like this is a great opportunity for me,” Sharp said. “Having worked with him before, I understand Coach Green’s coaching style and his coaching ability. I’m excited about working with him again and about coming back to Alabama. He and Coach (Tom) Schuberth have a lot of experience and I think I can add to what is already in place here. I really feel like we have a chance to do some good things here and I can’t wait to get started.”
In his previous job as a Green assistant, Sharp handled the Delta Devils’ student-athletes progress, while also organizing and coaching their individual skill workouts. He also served a major role in all other day-to-day coaching duties, including recruiting and opponent scouting.
Green hired Sharp at MVSU in 2005 after a one-year stop at Connors State College in Warner, Okla., where he served as an assistant coach and as the school’s intramural director.
He started his coaching career at Auburn, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in health and human performance in 2001. He was an administrative assistant coach for the Tigers from 2001-04 after a three-year playing career with the Tigers that saw them reach unprecedented heights.
Sharp began his three-year career with the Tigers in 1998-99 after transferring from West Georgia and immediately helped Auburn win its first Southeastern Conference regular season title since 1960. The Tigers posted a 29-4 record and a 14-2 mark in SEC play and took the nation’s No. 1 seed into the NCAA Tournament, where they advanced to the Sweet 16.
A year later, they went 24-10 and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation and Sharp was awarded the Tigers’ 6th Man Award. As a senior in 2000-01, he was a team captain and received the team’s Hustle/Playmaker Award.
Sharp is married to the former Kanika Collins and the couple has a daughter, Sidney Nicole Sharp (2), and a son, Reggie II, who was born in October.
