Altherias Warmley enters her tenth season on the bench with Rick Pietri’s staff in 2022-23.
Warmley has mentored the Gamecock guards since her arrival in 2013-14. In her first season, the program posted a 13-win turnaround from the previous season. She is also in charge of all scheduling for JSU hoops and handles all of the Gamecocks’ academic needs. The success on the hardwood translated into success in academics. Jax State was listed 14th in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association 2015 Academic Team Honor Roll presented by AT&T. JSU posted a team grade point average of 3.51. The Gamecocks were one of two Ohio Valley Conference teams listed in the top-25. The team GPA soared from a 2.3 in 2012-13 to a 3.38 team average in 2019-20.
Warmley was key in the development of two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference guard Candace Morton. Under Warmley's tutelage, Morton (2011-15), Briana Benson (2013-17), Taylor Hawks (2017-21), and Destany McLin (2013-17) have each joined JSU's 1,000-Point Club. Morton's 1,305 points rank fifth all-time.
The Gamecocks had an historic outing in the 2022-23 campaign. Pietri, Warmley, and the rest of the coaching staff guided Jacksonville State’s women to a Division I program-best 24-8 record. JSU claimed the ASUN West Division title in their first season back in the league and earned a bid to the WNIT, marking the program’s first postseason appearance in Division I competition.
Warmley helped lead the Gamecocks to a 16-14 record in 2022-23 as they posted their fourth winning season in the last five years. Their 9-9 mark in ASUN competition served as the sixth consecutive season with a .500 or better record in conference play. Kennedy Gavin, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, netted selections to the ASUN Conference’s Second-Team All-Conference and Women’s Basketball All-Academic squads. Jax State started the year off hot, breaking program records for points in a game, margin of victory, field goals, and field goals in a half in a 114-33 drubbing of Shorter in the season opener on Nov. 7. Following another successful season against challenging non-conference and conference slates, the Gamecocks once again advanced to the ASUN Tournament in March.
Warmley joined the JSU coaching staff after an 11-year stint as head coach at Alabama A&M.
In her decade-plus spent building the Lady Bulldog program, AAMU earned its first trip to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament under Warmley in 2003-04 and turned in the program’s first winning season since 1996-97 the following campaign with a 16-12 overall mark and 9-2 in the SWAC. The Lady Bulldogs posted a 17-13 overall mark and claimed their first 11 conference games before finishing with a 13-5 league mark. In 2010-11 she led AAMU to one of the school’s biggest wins as her squad topped Big Ten foe Minnesota. In addition to her duties as head women’s basketball coach at Alabama A&M, Warmley served for several years as the athletic department’s Senior Woman Administrator.
Warmley spent eight years on the staff at Middle Tennessee State before taking the head coaching position at AAMU. During her tenure in Murfreesboro, Tenn., the Lady Raiders posted a 140-94 record, won two Ohio Valley Conference titles, and earned two trips to the NCAA Tournament as well as two trips to the WNIT. While with MTSU, she mentored three OVC Freshmen of the Year, the former South Carolina Player of the Year, and several All-State performers. The All-Star Girls Report rated the 2001 signing class at MTSU one of the top 50 in the nation.
Warmley is a native of Bessemer, Alabama, where she starred in both volleyball and basketball at Jess Lanier High School. In 1986 she enrolled at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, walked on for the Lady Blazers in 1987, and went on to letter for three seasons (1987-1990). Warmley was a member of UAB’s 1989-90 squad that was crowned Sun Belt Conference regular season co-champions. She also spent her summers working in the mayor’s office with the Birmingham Youth Games.
After graduating from UAB, she served one season at Wenonah High School in Birmingham, Alabama, as a volunteer assistant coach. A year later, she joined the Lady Blazers coaching staff as the second assistant. Her main duties included recruiting, scouting, promotions, on-the-floor coaching, and coordinating team travel. She helped in guiding the 1992-93 Lady Blazers to the WNIT after they finished as Great Midwest Conference regular season co-champions with a 24-8 record. A year later, Warmley and UAB went a perfect 12-0 in GMC play to go along with their 23-6 overall mark. They earned the Great Midwest’s regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Warmley earned her M.S. in Education from Middle Tennessee State in 1997.
