Alex Poursanidis joins the Jacksonville State track and field staff as a graduated assistant prior to the 2019-20 academic year. The former University of Georgia standout won multiple NCAA All-American honors as a thrower for the Bulldogs.

Poursanidis threw the weight during the indoor season and the hammer during the outdoor season, nearing the top of the UGA record charts in both events. His collegiate accolades include three-consecutive NCAA All-American honors, and back-to-back Southeastern Conference Outdoor Champion titles.

He was named the SEC’s Men’s Freshman Field Athlete of the Year in 2014 where he won the SEC Outdoor Hammer title, and went on to finish sixth at the NCAA Championships with a throw of 227-3. He was named a NCAA First Team All-American.

He repeated as SEC Outdoor champion in 2015, along with winning individual hammer titles at the Georgia Relays and Florida Relays. He placed ninth at the NCAA Championships and was crowned a Second Team All-American. During the indoor season he finished sixth in the SEC in the weight throw.

Another NCAA Second Team All-American honor came in 2016, after finishing runner-up in both the indoor weight and the outdoor hammer conference championships.

Poursanidis hails from the island of Cyprus—about 80 miles south of Turkey, in the Mediterranean Sea. He was most recently the 2019 European Athletics Team Championships Second League Champions. The native of Paphos, Cyprus, was the high school record holder in the 4kg, 5kg and the 6kg hammer throws. He took eighth in the 2013 European Championships U-23 in Finland and finished fourth in 2012 at the World Championships.

He was a silver medalist after reaching 230-7 in the 5kg hammer at 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, after winning a bronze medal the previous year at the 2009 World Gymansiade in Quatar.
