Volleyball head coach Todd Garvey found a familiar face for his first graduate assistant at JSU, turning to former Lipscomb standout Ca’Layci Coffey. Garvey was an assistant for the Bisons in 2017 during Coffey’s junior season when LU posted a 16-13 record which included a 3-1 win over national-ranked Arizona in a match that saw Coffey post eight blocks to go along with three kills on eight swings. Oddly enough, Coffey’s 2016 squad faced Kentucky which featured current assistant Justin Sanders on the staff.
The connections don’t stop at the coaching staff. Coffey competed against JSU setter Lexie Libs’ East Tennessee State team in 2017.
Coffey helped Lipscomb to a 79-42 record over her four-year career in Nashville, and made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and 2016. She started all 30 matches as a senior, leading the team with 86 blocks and added another 276 kills from her middle position.
As a former middle, her duties will including working with that position group in particular, which faces filling the void of two-time all-OVC middle blocker Mackenzie Rombach in 2019. Coffey will also be responsible for keeping in-game stats, helping scout opponents and monitoring team academics.
