The Gamecocks upgraded their longtime home before the 2013 season, when the old grandstands at then-University Field were torn down to make way for a new state-of-the-art press box with suites and radio/tv booths and a 2,000-seat facility that features chairback seating behind home plate.
Jax State’s home since a Feb. 15, 1996 doubleheader against Tennessee State, the renovations came full circle before the 2014 season, when the old dugouts that served as the home of the Gamecock baseball and softball teams for years were torn down and new sunken dugouts with restrooms and a dressing facility for the Gamecocks were installed, making it one of the top Division I softball facilities in the Southeast.
Prior to the 2018 season, the Gamecocks added a state-of-the-art Daktronics high-definition video scoreboard display that stands behind the outfield wall in right center field. The display was the first high-definition softball video board in the Ohio Valley Conference at the time, and remains one of the best in Conference USA. Â
In 2019, an AstroTurf playing surface and drainage system was installed, making the field one of the first all turf playing surfaces in the southeast. The new surface includes bullpens for both the Gamecocks and their visitors and eliminates field maintenance and ensures field conditions won't impede Jax State's home schedule. A new covered hitting area began going up in 2022 following the destruction of the previous cage that came down during the EF-3 tornado that hit Jacksonville.Â
Â
On April 16, 2023, Jacksonville State President Dr. Don Killingsworth presented head coach Jana McGinnis with a resolution approved by the Jax State Board of Trustees which officially renamed the Gamecocks' home softball facility to Jana McGinnis Field. McGinnis, who led the Gamecocks for 31 seasons, became one of just 12 active Division I coaches with 1,000 career wins earlier during that 2023 season.Â
