Merritt Bowden begins his first season for Jack Crowe, but he is no stranger to Jacksonville State University.
Bowden was an All-American baseball player for the Gamecocks from 1988-1991 and was a member of two NCAA Division II National Championship teams and he advanced to the NCAA World Series four consecutive years from 1988-1991 at JSU.
Bowden spent the last two years as a graduate assistant coach at Auburn, where he assisted with all aspects of the defense and special teams. His primary duties including opponent scouting, organizing scout teams for the defense, video breakdown and on-campus recruiting for the Tigers.
Auburn finished the 2004 season with a 13-0 record and the SEC Championship and then the Tigers posted a 9-3 record and shared the SEC Western Division title.
Prior to joining the Auburn staff in 2004, Bowden was head coach at Thorsby High School from 1999-2001 and 2003. He was an associate scout with the Atlanta Braves from 1993-97 and served as the manager of the Selma Clover Leafs of the Southeastern League of Professional Baseball in 2002, where he was named manager of the year.
He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Isabella High School in Maplesville from 1994-95 after playing two years in the Minnesota Twins organization from 1991-92.
Born on December 24, 1968, he is married to the former Cheri Yeargan and the couple has three children, Brad (22), Ryan (19) and Dusty (15).
