JACKSONVILLE – The Jax State soccer team dropped a 2-0 match on Sunday afternoon to Middle Tennessee at the Jax State Soccer Complex. The match represented the Conference USA opener for both squads.

Jax State falls to 3-6-2 overall and 0-1-0 in CUSA play, while MTSU improves to 8-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in CUSA play.

The first half of action was quiet, as neither team could break through each other's defenses, and the score remained knotted at 0-0 through the first 45 minutes. Middle Tennessee held an advantage on shots at eight to one. but Jax State had two saves to MTSU's zero. Both squads had two fouls.

10 minutes into the second of action, MTSU's Hailey Phillips found Sacchi Bureau to break the tie with a strike just inches from the goal line, taking a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, Ania Denham found Hannah Murphy for her fourth goal of the year, doubling the lead at 2-0. The Blue Raiders only took four shots in the second half, with half of those being goals.

Jax State was unable to respond, cementing the 2-0 lead for MTSU. The Gamecocks ended the match with four shots, three of which were on goal, two saves, and three corner kicks.

The Gamecocks will be on the road for the following two matches, taking on Missouri State in Springfield, Mo., on Thursday, October 1, before heading south to take on FIU in Miami on Sunday, October 4.
