JACKSONVILLE – It's been 30 years since Jack Crowe stayed in a dorm with his players during preseason workouts, but the ninth year head coach will spend the next 16 days getting to know his team.
It's ironic the team will be staying in Crow Hall, which is a dormitory on the JSU campus. Although the dorm isn't named for the football coach, it will become Crowe Hall for the next few weeks. Crowe says he hasn't stayed with his team since he was the head coach at Livingston in 1978.
“This team is so new and there are just a lot of guys here who don't really know each other,” said Crowe. “I don't know some of them and I just want to see what they look like when they wake up in the morning.
“Before they put on their coaching faces, whether they are social with other players, whether they are shy, I just want to see what their personalities are like when they are not in the football field house,” added Crowe.
Crowe says he expects his first night in the dorm to be “quite” on Friday.
“I suspect it will be very quite tonight,” said Crowe just before moving into his dorm room on Friday evening. “I think these guys are going to be tired and be quite. I've got my toothbrush and my coffee pot, so I'm ready.”
Crowe was anxious to see junior quarterback
Ryan Perrilloux on the practice field for the first time on Friday and he wasn't disappointed.
“It's obvious to me that he is an extremely accurate passer and the thing that impresses me the most is how quickly the ball comes out of his hands,” said Crowe. “It was great anticipation to see him throw. He is a big, big athlete and he is extremely effective. He gets to his place quick, he gets is out of his hand quick and the ball gets there quick and it gets to where he is throwing it.”
Jax State worked in helmets for less than two hours on Friday in the first workout of the season. The Gamecocks return to the practice field at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and will work in helmets in preparation for the season-opener on August 28 at Georgia Tech.
