JACKSONVILLE – Head coach Jack Crowe is anxious to see the Gamecocks work in pads for the first time on Tuesday and he says he will keep his eye on the JSU running game in preparation for Saturday's scrimmage.
“We've got a scrimmage on Saturday and it's all pointed towards getting used to the pads,” Crowe said following JSU's Monday evening practice. “We want to make sure that when we make our evaluation on Saturday, that we've prepared them to show us what they can do.”
Crowe is going to pay special attention to the Gamecock running backs during Tuesday's workout.
“What I'm looking for is a running game,” said Crowe. “There is evidence that there are some good pieces to this. The piece that there is not very much evidence of and something that has been very important to us is the running backs. We've got four running backs in Daniel Jackson, Shawn Green, Brandon George and Andrecus Lindley and all four of them has an even chance. We have to say anything carried over from last year doesn't carry much weight at this point.”
Jax State will practice again at 7:45 p.m. to allow some members of the team to attend their final day of summer school classes. Crowe says that the practice will be used to prepare the team for the first scrimmage on Saturday.
“We'll put the pads on and try and polish it up before Saturday,” said Crowe. “We'll try and get the butterflies out of their stomachs so when we line up on Saturday, they will be comfortable enough to show us what they can do.”
The Gamecocks will hold their annual Football Fan Day on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Paul Snow Stadium. Fans will have the opportunity to meet the 2008 Gamecocks and coaching staff and will also get to watch the first scrimmage of the preseason at 7 p.m.
