
Toles Scores 21 but Gamecocks Fall To UT Martin, 92-73

JACKSONVILLE – Senior Jonathan Toles scored a season-high 21 points to lead three Gamecocks in double figures on Saturday afternoon, but Lester Hudson and UT Martin came away with a 92-73 win over the Jacksonville State men's basketball team at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Toles, a 6-foot-2 guard from Montgomery, Ala., went above the 20-point plateau for the first time this season on a 6-for-14 effort from the floor and a 7-for-12 outing from the free throw line. Hudson, the Ohio Valley Conference's preseason player of the year, led all players in the game with 25 points, just below his average of 27.5 points per game, which ranks second nationally.
Sophomores Jeremy Bynum and Nick Murphy each added 15 points for the Gamecocks (8-8, 2-5 OVC) in their fifth-straight loss in the all-time series. Toles dished four assists, while junior Amadou Mbodji led JSU with six rebounds.
Hudson led a duo of Skyhawks (12-6, 5-3 OVC) with at least 20 points. Sophomore Marquis Weddle added 20 points that were bolstered by six 3-point baskets. Delrico Lane added 16 points and six assists. Hudson's game-high eight rebounds paced UTM to a 36-35 advantage on the glass.
The Skyhawks jumped out to a commanding first half lead on a 17-for-27 (.517) effort from the field in the first 20 minutes, a stretch that saw the Skyhawks connect on 9-of-15 (.600) of their 3-point attempts in the half. They ended the game with a .517 shooting percentage, while the Gamecocks shot just .381 from the field.
The Gamecocks will play their next four games on the road, beginning with a 7:30 p.m. matchup at Tennesee State on Thursday in Nashville.
