MARTIN, Tenn. – The hottest team in the Ohio Valley Conference continued its recent run on Thursday night, when the Jacksonville State men's basketball team was a 99-74 victim in Tennessee-Martin's ninth-straight win.
The Skyhawks (17-6, 10-3 OVC) hit 63 percent of their shots in the first half to jump on the Gamecocks (11-13, 5-10 OVC) and never looked back, rolling to their sixth-straight win in the all-time series.
Preseason and reigning OVC Player of the Year Lester Hudson led all scorers with 27 points to maintain his status as the only player in Division I with at least 20 points in every game this season. He entered the game averaging just over 27 points per game, ranking second nationally behind Davidson's Stephen Curry.
The Gamecocks were led by a pair of sophomores, who each scored a dozen points in the loss. Oxford native Jeremy Bynum and Bronx, N.Y., native Nick Murphy each scored 12, while freshman Stephen Hall pitched in 11 points. It was the Birmingham native's fourth career appearance in the starting lineup.
The Skyhawks controlled almost every aspect of the game, connecting on 59 percent of their attempts from the field and posting a 35-24 advantage on the boards. They outscored the Gamecocks in the paint, 48-26.
Hudson paced a corps of four UTM players that scored in double figures, a group composed of Olajide Hay (13), Marquis Weddle (12) and Bezor Simmons (12). Djero Riedewald led all players with eight rebounds.
JSU senior Jonathan Toles scored eight points to go along with a team-high five assists. Freshman John Barnes scored nine points, while fellow freshman Brandon Crawford pitched in seven.
The Gamecocks got a trey from Bynum just 51 seconds into the game that gave them a 3-2 lead, but the Skyhawks turned it on. They went on a 30-10 run from that point to put the game out of reach in its early stages. They would lead by as many as 29 down the stretch.
Jacksonville State will travel to Murray, Ky., where the Gamecocks will take on Murray State at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on the JSU Radio Network with Mike Parris calling the action.
