JACKSONVILLE – Tennessee Tech put an end to Jacksonville State's season on Saturday afternoon, when the Golden Eagles claimed a 91-74 win and the eighth and final spot in next week's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
The Gamecocks (11-17, 5-13 OVC) entered their final game of the regular season tied with the Golden Eagles (12-17, 6-12) for eighth place in the standings, but Tech got the win to end the Gamecocks' season on a losing note for the first time in three seasons.
The Golden Eagles got a combined 43 points from their inside tandem of Daniel Northern (22) and Kevin Murphy (21) and controlled the paint, while the Gamecocks got double figures from four players.
Sophomore Nick Murphy led JSU with 18 points, thanks to a 10-for-14 effort from the free throw line, and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Jeremy Bynum added 15 points for the Gamecocks, while freshmen Stephen Hall and Brandon Crawford pitched in 14 and 12 points, respectively.
In a game that featured the OVC's two worst free throw shooting teams, the Gamecocks were impressive from the charity stripe, hitting 24 of their 33 attempts, but it was the Golden Eagles who stole the show from the line, connecting on 29 of their 30 shots.
Senior guards DeAndre Bray and Jonathan Toles closed their Jacksonville State careers on what was Senior Day for the JSU basketball program. Bray, a 5-foot-6 Atlanta native, scored eight points and dished eight assists, while Toles, a Montgomery native, added six points in a game where his participation was limited because of foul trouble.
Norther was 6-for-11 from the floor but 10-for-10 from the charity stripe, while also pulling down a game-high eight boards. The Golden Eagles won the overall battle on the glass, 36-27.
JSU shot just under 40 percent from the floor, but a 36-percent effort in the second half allowed Tennessee Tech, who shot 59 percent in the final 20 minutes, to pull away. The Golden Eagles outscored the Gamecocks, 50-16, in the paint.
