JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team couldn't claw its way back down the stretch on Monday night, when Tennessee State handed the Gamecocks an 80-70 defeat in Ohio Valley Conference play at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Tigers (7-17, 5-9 OVC) used a 10-0 run in the second half to take the lead for good, and they wouldn't allow the Gamecocks (11-12, 5-9 OVC) to pull any closer than four in downing the home team and pulling into a three-way tie with JSU and Tennessee Tech for seventh place in the league standings.
The Gamecocks hurt themselves in several ways, with the free throw line being one of them. JSU went to the line 32 times, but connected on just 15 of them (.469). They also turned it over eight times in the second half to lead to a dozen TSU points. The Tigers' Gerald Robinson led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 9-of-11 from the stripe.
Jax State had three players score in double figures in the game, with freshman Brandon Crawford leading the way with 14. The Montgomery, Ala., native pulled in nine rebounds to tie freshman Geddes Robinson for the game high. Senior Jonathan Toles added 12, while sophomore Nick Murphy added 10.
TSU shot 59 percent from the floor in the game and was 17-for-27 (.630) in the second half to never allow the Gamecocks to pull back into the game late. JSU shot just 38 percent from the floor, but had a 44-30 advantage on the glass.
Toles dished seven assists and senior DeAndre Bray added four, making him just the fourth player in school history to record 500 assists in his career. The Atlanta native finished the night by pushing his total to 502.
It was the Tigers' first win since firing head coach Cy Alexander last week, giving interim head coach Mark Pittman his first career win.
Jerrell Houston was 9-for-12 from the field to score 19 points for the Tigers, while Darius Cox and Parker Smith pitched in 10 apiece.
The Gamecocks take to the road later in the week, when they take on UT Martin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in Martin, Tenn.
