JACKSONVILLE –
Blake Seguin went 4-for-6 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games to lead Jacksonville State (7-5) to a 26-6 win over Alabama State (7-5) at Rudy Abbott Field on Wednesday.
The Gamecocks finished with a season-high 20 hits and the 26 runs was the third most in school history.
“It was a good day for us in the sense that hopefully some guys who had beEn struggling got themselves going at the plate,” said JSU head coach
Jim Case. “We had some guys get off the snide and get some hits..”
Heath Wall,
Matt McLaughlin and
Sam Eberle each added three hits to go with Seguin's first four-hit outing, while
Jay Davis and
Andrew Edge each added a pair of hits. McLaughlin led the Gamecocks with five RBI, while Cunningham and Seguin each finished with four.
JSU's
Kevin Elwell allowed just two hits and had four strikeouts to earn his first career win in his first collegiate start on the mound. Jeremy Adams (0-1) gave up five runs in 2 2/3 innings to get stuck with the loss for the Hornets.
“I though Kevin (Elwell) gave us a good start in his first career one tonight, and I felt really good about Tanner (Freshour) and the way he threw out of the pen,” Case added. “Hopefully that's what we needed to get us going in the right direction as we hit the road for a trip that we are really looking forward to playing.”
Jax State scored seven runs in the third inning, highlighted by a three-RBI double by McLaughlin. The Gamecocks added a run in the fourth, before ASU scored four in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-4.
JSU plated a run in the home half of the fifth and Alabama State matched with a run it the top of the sixth to make the score 9-5, before the Gamecocks scored their most runs in an inning this season with 11.
The first 10 batters in the sixth inning reached base and scored as the Gamecocks sent 13 to the plate, highlighted by a two-run home run by Cunningham, as JSU built a 20-5 lead.
Jacksonville State added five in the seventh inning after Wall, Davis and
Tyler McGrady each had doubles and McLaughlin hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning for the final margin.
Jax State travels to Winter Haven, Fla., for the Russ Matt Central Florida Games for its spring break trip, where JSU will play six games over six days. The Gamecocks will face Miami (Ohio) on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
