JACKSONVILLE – Southern Mississippi's Elja Van Berlo captured a three-set victory over Viviane Marani at No. 1 singles to help the Golden Eagles edge Jacksonville State (10-4) 4-3 at the JSU Tennis Courts on Wednesday.
USM (9-6) won the doubles point to open a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Martina Dessbesell and Eloah Lopes won JSU's lone doubles match with an 8-4 victory over Hollie Robinson and Shannon Rogers at No. 2.
Dessbesell defeated Kaluza 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Kimberly Ferris eased past Rogers, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 to cut the USM lead to 3-2. Kristen Fuller's 6-2, 6-4 win over Zoe Lee at No. 5 evened the match at three points apiece with No. 1 singles entering the third set.
Jacksonville State hits the road for two Ohio Valley Conference matches against Eastern Kentucky on Friday at 10 a.m. in Richmond, Ky., and Morehead State on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Morehead, Ky.
