PADUCAH, Ky. – Kyle Bluestein and Daniel Adamson each had three hits to lead No. 6 Jacksonville State to an 11-5 win over No. 1 Eastern Illinois on Thursday to advance to the winner's bracket of the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship.
The Gamecocks improve to 30-24 on the season to post their seventh straight 30-win season. Jax State will now face Tennessee Tech, which is the only other undefeated team in this year's tournament. Eastern Illinois falls to 36-13 after dropping its third straight game to the Gamecocks.
“It was a good night for us in a lot of ways,” said JSU head coach Jim Case. “Daniel (Watts) didn't have his best stuff, but he was able to take the ball tonight and work out of some situations and got a double-play or two. In a rivalry like this, I will take that type of effort from Daniel every time.”
Freshman Daniel Watts (5-5) pitched five solid innings on the mound after allowing just four hits and striking out five to earn the win. EIU's Josh Mueller (8-1) got rocked for seven runs and nine hits in just four innings to suffer his first loss of the year.
Jax State took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, highlighted by a RBI single by Bluestein and a two-RBI double by Adamson as the Gamecocks took the earl lead.
Jacksonville State took control in the fifth inning as the Gamecocks scored five runs on five hits as Adamson drove in two runs, Sam Eberle had a RBI single and Jake Sharrock drove in two more runs with a single up the middle as JSU built a 8-0 lead.
Eastern Illinois scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, before the Gamecocks scored two in the sixth as Bluestein and Eberle each had solo home runs to build a 10-1 lead.
Eberle drove in JSU's final run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, before the Panthers scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for the final margin.
Jax State pounded out 16 hits as six different players had multiple-hits for the Gamecocks. Blake Seguin, Jay Davis, Jake Sharrock and Eberle each added two hits to go along with three from Adamson and Bluestein.
Zach Borenstein had three hits, while Jordan Tokarz and Alex Gee each had two hits for the Panthers.
The Gamecocks advance to Friday night's championship round for the sixth straight season and will face Tech at 6:30 p.m. Jax State will throw junior right-hander Ben Tootle (3-4, 4.06 ERA), while the Golden Eagles will counter with Michael Alcorn (2-3, 5.84 ERA).
