
Gamecocks Fall In OVC Championship Game to Tennessee Tech

PADUCAH, Ky. – A.J. Kirby-Jones drove in the winning run in the top of the tenth inning as Tennessee Tech earned a 4-3 extra inning win over Jacksonville State in the championship game of the Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Tournament on Saturday.
Jacksonville State defeated Murray State 9-3 earlier in the day as the Gamecocks advanced to the OVC Championship Game for the fifth time over the last six years after sophomore Todd Cunningham hit a pair of three-run home runs.
Sam Eberle hit a solo home run in the second inning and Cunningham followed with a two-out three run homer to give the Gamecocks the early 4-0 lead.
Murray State's Wes Cunningham hit a three-run home run in the top of the third inning off of Gamecock starter Mitch Miller, but would not score again.
Jax State added five runs in the home half of the seventh inning, hightlighted by Cunningham's second three-run home run of the day. His second home run came from the right side of the plate, after the sophomore slugged his first homer from the left side.
JSU's Tanner Freshour (3-3) scattered six hits and had a pair of strikeouts to earn the win, while MSU's Lucas Allen (0-5) gave up six hits and six runs to suffer the loss.
In the title game, Tech took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Alex Henry led the game off with a solo home run, but the Gamecocks answered in the home half of the first.
Cunningham walked and stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Kyle Bluestein. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Bluestein scored when Daniel Adamson had a RBI double as the Gamecocks built a 2-1 lead.
Eberle followed with a RBI double to right center to score Adamson as Jax State pushed the lead to 3-1.
Tennessee Tech tied the game in the fifth inning after Casanova Donaldson led off with a single and Evan Webb followed with a two-run home run to tie the game at 3-3.
Ben Burgess worked the final four innings on the mound and allowed just one hit and had four strikeouts to earn the win for Tech, while Bill Henke (2-3) was the tough luck loser after allowing a pair of hits and the game winning run in the tenth inning.
Kyle Bluestein had a pair of hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Chad Oberaker, Webb and Henry each had a pair of hits to lead Tennessee Tech at the plate.
Cunningham, Bluestein, Eberle, Leach and Austin Lucas each earned All-Tournament honors for Jacksonville State, which ends the season with a 31-26 overall record. It marks the seventh straight 30-win season for the Gamecocks under Jim Case.
