Jack Crowe Press Conference Quotes - The Alabama A&M Game

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH JACK CROWE PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
The Alabama A&M Game

ON THE FLORIDA STATE GAME
“We had a very competitive football game with Florida State. I was very proud of the preparation and the mentality that went into the game. I have thought for sometime that this team was talented enough, that if put the right positions, could play a competitive game against a quality opponent like Florida State. No matter what I think, the big thing is the mentality the players take to a game like that. Before you can win, you got to believe you can win and then you got make a commitment to win. I think our players took that mentality into the game. I think we may have had it against Georgia Tech. We just had some things happen early and after we got past that I thought that game was some indication of that mentality existing at the time. In this game, we survived the first five-minute situation that we have not survived in other games like this. So, the mentality is one that if sustained will serve us well. I think our coaches came up with a good plan. I think it was a quality-coaching job by our offensive and defensive coaches. I don't think there is any question that Florida State arrived with an emotional hangover from the week before. I do think they were back sometime around the second quarter, and I think we got the best of Florida State after a certain point. What I am proud of is when we did get the best out of them, we still sustained a high quality of play against what I think was a good as they could play. Having said all that, we lost a football game. We did some quality things, but we had four or five plays that made a difference in the game. Give them credit for making the plays. If we had made the plays, we would have won the game. The pressure that their front four put on us caused some plays that kept us from putting more points on the board. Their receivers and quarterback protected well. They made some good throws against good coverage.”

ON HEADING INTO ALABAMA A&M AFTER A BIG GAME
“We may be the team with the emotional hangover this week and we better get over it. Bring in the Alka-Seltzer, because we can't afford to have one. There are things that we haven't done that good football teams have to do. We got to run the ball. We haven't had anything like what is expected of us in the running game. We got to return punts and kicks. We have been absent of that. So, we have got our challenges. Alabama A&M historically has just been a bear for us. They have got some momentum. They are 2-0 and they have already beaten an OVC team handily. We have been in two big arenas and hopefully we weren't playing off the excitement of the challenge, because the arena is not as big but the battle will be just as big or bigger. The biggest battles aren't fought in the biggest arenas. This one will be electric though. My feeling is that this will be a packed house with two loud bands. I think our band has its biggest challenge. They are 2-0 from what I understand.”

ON ALABAMA A&M's SKILL PLAYERS
“Ulysses Banks is a receiver and a runner that has had dominant performances through their first two games. The receiver is Thomas Harris. He is an All-American that can play for anybody. Their quarterback is back. Those players are prominent players and they made plays against us last year. They are basically the same team that we played. They are a more mature team. I think they are a highly motivated team. They will play better together and they are playing at home. I am very impressed. Coach Jones is as good of a football coach as there is. His players play hard and are a classy bunch. They had eight sacks last week against Hampton. Hampton is a team that has visited the playoffs. Alabama A&M is going to bring pressure and we gave up seven sacks against Florida State.”

ON JSU'S OFFENSIVE LINE
“I am not satisfied with out offensive line. I don't care who we play but I do understand where we are in (the development of) our offensive line. That understanding or tolerance is shallow against the time. I expect us to get better. The first time I look out there and they are not getting better then I will be really concerned. We got some players up there playing as good as you can play. But it takes five and we are not a five-man unit right now. Matt Washington got back on the practice field last week but I wouldn't start looking for him to show up on the depth chart right away. But then again practice could change that.”

ON THE PLAY OF RYAN PERRILLOUX'S FIRST GAME BACK
“Ryan is a great player. No disrespect to Ponder (FSU's QB), but he was the best quarterback on that field and he is going to be the best quarterback on every field we play on. He is dealing with having to become whatever is needed, where the match ups are and where he can benefit. But, he has to carry that tough load. He will stand in there and he will do the tough work. We have got to be smart with him and he has to be smart with the game plan every week to stay inside the system and make the system work. But, I thought under those circumstances, he showed enormous toughness. We had some offensive production and I think he was the key to it.”
