JACKSONVILLE – After picking up a pair of Ohio Valley Conference road wins last week at Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team returns to Pete Matthews Coliseum on Thursday, Jan. 13 against Murray State. Tip off is set for 5:15 p.m.
The Gamecocks, 6-10 overall, moved to 3-2 in OVC after their come-from-behind wins at EKU and MSU. Jax State erased an 11-point second deficit in Richmond to claim a 72-65 win. Trailing by nine points with just over a minute and a half left in regulation, JSU sent the game into an extra period with a game-tying three pointer at the buzzer. The Red and White out-lasted MSU in the overtime session to secure an 81-80 win. The last time JSU claimed back-to-back road wins in the OVC was during the 2003-04 season. Murray State has had the Gamecocks' number in the series between the two schools as it has won 12 of the previous 14 meetings, including all seven games contested at pete Matthews Coliseum. JSU's wins have come in Murray, Ky. in 2004 and 2006. MSU enters the affair with a nine-game winning streak against JSU.
JSU junior Brittany Wiley, who was named this week's Adidas OVC Player of the Week, leads the Gamecocks in scoring at 14.4 points per game. The Carrollton, Ga.-native combined for 38 points over the last two games and posted 27 of those points in the second half of both games. Wiley has scored 16-plus points in eight straight games entering the tussle with Murray State. Junior Brittany Manning also collected one of the league's weekly honors as she was tabbed the Adidas Newcomer of the Week by the league office. Manning turned in a season-best 15 points at EKU and added eight points versus MSU, six from the free throw line.
Since OVC play began, the JSU offense has heated up as it is averaging 69.4 points per game in league contests – a +12.1 margin against non-conference foes. The Gamecocks rank fourth in league in scoring and third in the OVC in field goal percentage at 42.5. On the defensive end, JSU is listed second in the conference in steals with a 9.0 average.
The Gamecocks will wrap up the January home schedule on Saturday, Jan. 15, welcoming Tennessee-Martin to campus for a 2 p.m. tip off. Both games will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network.
