MOREHEAD, Ky. – Jacksonville State knocked off Ohio Valley Conference front-runner Morehead State, 81-80, in a thrilling overtime women's basketball contest at MSU's Johnson Arena on Saturday night.
A missed free throw by MSU's Allie Turner with 0.3 seconds left in overtime sealed the deal for JSU as it moves to 3-2 in OVC play and 6-10 overall. With the win, the Gamecocks completed the weekend sweep in Kentucky as they downed Eastern Kentucky on Thursday night. MSU falls to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in league play.
“I am so proud of our kids, especially how they played in the second half,” said JSU Head Coach Annette Watts. “It's another step in the process with this program and our girls never quit.”
Watts, in her first season at the helm of the JSU women's program, picked up her 150th career win in the process. The win marked the first win over MSU on its home floor since the 2003-04 season.
In a mirror image of Thursday's come-from-behind win at EKU, Jax State found itself down nine, 67-58, with just over a minute and a half left in regulation, it finished the second half on an 11-2 run to send the game into extra time on Danielle Beneby's three-pointer with two seconds left on the clock.
In the overtime session, the Red and White took its first lead since it led 5-3 in the early stages of the game, on a pair of free throws to start overtime. MSU took a one-point, 79- 78 edge with 1:11 in OT on a four-point play from Turner after knocking down a trey and getting fouled. JSU responded with a lay up from Destiny Lane the next trip down the floor. Amanda McCarthy knocked down a free throw to make it a two-point game in the waning seconds.
Junior Danhielle Vaughn recorded her third double-double of the season thanks to a 15-point second half output. The Huntsville, Ala-native pulled down ten rebounds in her 34 minutes of action. Junior Brittany Wiley posted 18 points and one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. She has now scored 16-plus points in eight straight games. Zenobia Pitts added nine points in the road win, while Manning, Beneby and Hill pitched in eight points.
“She (Danielle Vaughn) stepped up to the challenge and Wiley is so consistent for us,” added Watts.
The Eagles were led by Pre-Season OVC Player of the Year selection Channa Hillman. Hillman poured in a season-best 39 points, including 16 straight points to open up the second half. Linda Dixon carded 17 points in the setback.
JSU returns home for the only time in the month of January next weekend as it hosts Murray State on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 5:15 p.m. JSU welcomes Tennessee-Martin to campus on Saturday, Jan. 15. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
