JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team's homecoming didn't go as planned on Friday night, when the Gamecocks dropped a 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 12-25, 25-20, 15-10) Ohio Valley Conference match to Eastern Illinois in their first home match after a four-match road trip.
After dropping the first set, the Gamecocks (5-15, 4-7 OVC) stormed back to claim the next two. The Panthers (5-15, 3-7 OVC) answered, though, rallying to win the final two sets and claim the first meeting between the two in 2011.
Senior Liza Senenkova made a convincing return to floor after missing the last six matches with an ankle injury. The Tashkent, Uzbekistan, native led the Gamecock offense with 18 kills on a .279 attack percentage and also blocked seven EIU attacks. She was joined by fellow senior Stephanie Koontz as the lone Gamecocks with double-digit kills. Koontz, a native of Edwardsburg, Mich., added 13 on a .379 attack percentage.
Freshman Nicole Mergtet had a hand on six blocks at the net for JSU, while Koontz assisted on four of the team's 13.5 team blocks.
Sophomore setter Abbey Heredia dished 31 of the team's 53 assists but had a huge night on the back row. The Cary, Ill., native dug 22 balls on defense to lead the Gamecocks in that category. Sophomore Kelly Cole added 14 digs, while senior Lauren Harkins pitched in 12.
The Panthers got a match-high 19 kills from Emily Franklin, who led a group of four EIU players with double figures in that category. Chrissie Albers dished 52 of the team's 59 assists and picked up 17 digs.
The Gamecocks continue their four-match homestand on Saturday, when they host the newest member of the OVC, SIUE at 2 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Admission is free.
