JACKSONVILLE – Senior Lauren Harkins notched her first career double-double but it wasn't enough on Saturday afternoon, when the Jacksonville State volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 30-28, 24-26, 15-13) Ohio Valley Conference loss.
A senior from Louisville, Ky., Harkins had a career-high 13 kills and picked up a season-high 27 digs and inched closer to the 2,000 digs mark. Already the school's career digs leader, she passed Murray State's Kim Koehler for eighth place on the OVC's career digs list. She sits just two digs out of seventh place on that list and needs just four to become JSU's first and the OVC's seventh member of the 2,000 digs club.
She was one of five Gamecocks (6-16, 4-8 OVC) with double figures in the digs category and was one of four with double digits in kills against the Cougars (8-15, 3-8 OVC). Sophomore Kelly Cole led JSU on the back row with 30 digs, the Mishawaka, Ind., native's second career 30-digs match.
Freshman Alicia Dukes added a career-high 17 digs and pitched in nine kills on a .500 attack percentage, while senior Stephanie Koontz's .429 attack percentage led to her match-high 17 kills. Junior Jen Meyer and senior Liza Senenkova added 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
Koontz, a native of Edwardsburg, Mich., blocked seven Cougar attacks, leading a JSU front row that totaled 11 team blocks. Dukes, Senenkova and freshman Nicole Merget each had a hand in three blocks apiece.
Sophomore Abbey Heredia and freshman Alina Agamy split the Gamecocks' setter duties with 31 and 30 assists, respectively, and both picked up double-doubles thanks to big matches on defense. Agamy, a Bloomington, ill., native picked up 16 digs, while Heredia, of Cary, ill., added 14.
The Cougars, the newest member of the Ohio Valley Conference got 16 kills and 21 digs from Julia Whitfield in their first-ever match against the Gamecocks. Chelsea Colclasure led all players with 37 digs, while Sammi Minton had 60 of her team's 67 assists.
The Gamecocks will be at home next weekend, when they host Murray State on Friday at 6 p.m. and Southeast Missouri on Saturday at 6 p.m. Admission is free to all JSU home volleyball matches.
