JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team finished its regular season in style on Saturday afternoon, when the Gamecocks swept Eastern Kentucky, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-16), to secure a spot in next week's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
The Gamecocks (11-19, 9-1 OVC) needed a win to keep their hopes alive for the six-team event that will be held in Morehead, Ky. They will find out later Saturday whether they will be the No. 5 of No. 6 seed and who they will face in the single-elimination tourney. They pull into a three-way tie with the Colonels (14-17, 11-9 OVC) and either Murray State and Austin Peay, but every tiebreaker scenario has JSU in the field.
Junior Hivya Leite carried the Gamecock offense on Saturday, rolling to 16 kills on a .444 attack percentage. The Cabedelo, Brazil, native committed just four errors on 27 swings to boost a JSU offense that hit .257, and grabbed 10 digs on the back row to secure her ninth double-double of the season.
Three seniors wrapped up their home careers on Saturday, which was Senior Day for the JSU volleyball program. Middle blocker Liza Senenkova totaled nine kills and put back seven blocks in her final match at Pete Mathews coliseum, while fellow middle blocker Stephanie Koontz added six kills on a .308 attack percentage and three blocks. Libero Lauren Harkins picked up 11 digs on the back row to run her school-record total to 2,143.
KJunior Jen Meyer pitched in five kills on eight attacks for a .625 percentage and added four of JSU's 11.0 team blocks.
Freshman Alina Agamy had eight digs and six blocks to go along with 14 assists, while sophomore Abbey Heredia led the way with 24 assists.
The Colonels got 12 kills from Alexis Plagens and 19 digs from Dena Ott.
