FINAL STATS
MARTIN, Tenn. – A sluggish first half did the Jacksonville State men's basketball in on Thursday night, when UT Martin was able to pull away and hold on to a 68-55 win over the Gamecocks in Ohio Valley Conference play.
The Gamecocks (5-21, 3-12 OVC) committed 15 of their 26 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, while shooting just 5-for-23 from the floor in that same stretch. That drought allowed the Skyhawks (9-17, 4-10 OVC) to build a 14-point halftime lead they wouldn't give up.
Senior Nick Murphy was the lone Gamecock in double figures and led all scorers with 20 points, all in the second half. The Bronx, N.Y., native got off just two shots in the first 20 minutes but went 8-for-10 the rest of the way to account for his 12th-straight double-digit scoring output and his third 20-point game of the season. His 8-for-12 night from the floor was one of the few highlights on a night that saw the rest of his team shoot just .316 from the floor.
Troy King led a trio of Skyhawks in double figures with 17 points, 13 in the second half. They also got 13 apiece from Reuben Clayton and Mike Liabo.
The Gamecocks were able to force 25 UTM turnovers and finish the night even with the Skyhawks on the glass with 28 boards apiece. It was JSU's miscues that proved most costly, as they turned into a 24-16 advantage in points off turnovers. UTM also took advantage of several trips to the free throw line, going 18-for-23 in charity shots. The Gamecocks shot a batter percentage from the line but had just 10 free throw attempts and made eight.
Nothing went the Gamecocks' way in the first half, as they struggled to a .217 field goal percentage while turning it over 15 times. The Skyhawks had 11 turnovers but turned the Gamecocks' into a 15-4 advantage in points off turnovers. UTM was 10-for-20 from the floor in the half and controlled the paint, outscoring JSU by 12 inside to build a 32-18 lead at the intermission.
JSU showed a little life early in the second half, pulling as close as seven in the first few minutes and again with a little less than six minutes remaining, but UTM kept answering with small runs to push its lead back into double figures.
The Gamecocks will now travel to Murray, Ky., where they will take on first place Murray State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CT. They will then return home for a Tuesday date with Austin Peay, JSU's final home game of the season. It will be Senior Night for the JSU program, which will honor the team's three seniors in a pregame ceremony, and all general admission tickets will be just $1.
