JACKSONVILLE – Kennesaw State rallied for seven runs over the final three innings on Wednesday to spoil the Jacksonville State baseball team's home opener with a 9-6 win at Rudy Abbott Field.
The Gamecocks (0-2) took a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning but couldn't hold off a red-hot Owls (5-0) team. KSU capped its rally with a four-run ninth that gave the Owls the lead for the first time since the first inning, one they wouldn't give up.
Junior Erik Underwood went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in just his second Division I game since transferring to JSU from Uba College. The Reno, Nev., native continued a hot start to his JSU career and raised his batting average to .625 on the young season. He led a group of four Gamecocks with multiple hits on a night that JSU rattled off 12 as a team.
Senior Jake Sharrock, also off to a hot start in 2011, went 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI to raise his average to .714 and his on-base percentage to .800 on the year. Junior Sam Eberle had two hits in five at bats, while junior Ben Waldrip drove in two runs in his 2-for-5 night.
The Owls got a 3-for-5 effort from Peyton Hart and a pair of RBI from Aaron Dobbs and Ronnie Freeman. Dobbs' two runs driven in were the big ones, coming on a two-run double in the ninth that turned a 6-5 JSU lead into a 7-6 Owls advantage. They would tack on two more before holding off JSU's rally effort in the ninth.
Freeman extended the nation's longest active hitting streak to 34 in the Owls win.
JSU senior Todd Horsnby (0-1) was tagged with the loss after he surrendered four runs, just one earned, on three hits and a walk in 1.1 innings on the mound. He was one of six JSU pitchers that saw action in a game that was started by sophomore Hunter Rivers. The native of Trinity, Ala., allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in 3.1 innings. Junior Tanner Freshour tossed 2.2 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits.
Sean Fream started the game for KSU and threw four innings, allowing three runs on six hits in the process. J.B. Johnson (1-0) earned the win in relief, striking out three in 1.2 hitless innings of work.
The Gamecocks will take to the road this weekend for a three-game series at Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The set will start at 3 p.m. CT on Friday.
