Jim Case Picks Up 300th Win as Gamecocks Sweep Southern lllinois With 6-1 Win on Sunday

JACKSONVILLE – The Gamecocks won their eighth straight game on Sunday with a 6-1 win over Southern Illinois as Jacksonville State head coach Jim Case picked up his 300th career win.
Jax State improves to 11-3 on the season, which marks the best start under Case and it also is the best start for the Gamecocks since opening the 2000 season with a 14-3 mark. The three-game sweep over Southern Illinois was the fourth straight three-game sweep, dating back to last season, and the sixth straight series win.
Junior Aaron Elias had three strikeouts and allowed just one run in seven solid innings on the mound to improve to 2-0 on the season. Todd Eaton (1-3) got stuck with the loss after allowing all six runs in 4 2/3 innings on the mound.
The Gamecocks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Coty Blanchard scored on a Sam Eberle infield grounder, and extended the lead in the third inning on a RBI single by Eberle.
Jax State added two more runs in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Blanchard, while Andrew Bishop scored on a wild pitch to give the Gamecocks a 4-0 lead.
Southern Illinois scored its only run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Sivertsen to cut the lead to 4-1, before the Gamecocks tacked on the final two runs in the home half of the fifth.
Erik Underwood led off with a double and came in to score on Kyle Bluestein's RBI triple down the left field line. Andrew Bishop followed with a RBI single down the left field line to score Bluestein for the final margin.
Christo Sullivan led the Gamecocks with three hits in his first career start, while Blanchard, Bluestein and Bishop each had a pair of hits. Blanchard extended his streaking of reaching base to 12 games, while Eberle has the longest active hitting streak at four games.
Chris Murphy, Jake Welch and Nick Johnson each had two hits for Southern Illinois.
