Ben Waldrip Named OVC Player of the Week as Gamecocks Prepare to Host Auburn on Tuesday

Jacksonville State's Ben Waldrip was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Waldrip earned his second OVC Player of the Week honor of the season after hitting .471 (8-for-17) with four runs scored, a double, home run and four RBI in four games during the Gamecocks' trip to the Russ Matt Central Florida Games in Winter Haven.

The junior had three multi-hit games to raise his batting average 31 points to .397. Against Big Ten preseason favorite Indiana, he was 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the ninth inning that gave JSU its first lead of the day.

Against Northeastern, Weldrip was 2-for-4 as the Gamecocks won 3-2 and in the finale, he drove in three runs in a victory over Bucknell. That included what proved to be the game-winning runs with a two-RBI double in the sixth inning.

Jacksonville State will host Auburn on Tuesday and it marks the first time the Tigers have been to Jacksonville since the 1985 season, when Bo Jackson was playing for Auburn.

The Gamecocks have won 11 of their last 13 games and will start freshman left-hander Casey Antley (1-0, 3.21 ERA), while Auburn is schedule to start junior right-hander Andrew Morris (1-1, 4.82 ERA).

The Tigers, ranked No. 21 in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, earned a 9-4 win over Jax State on Feb. 22 in the opening game of the season for the Gamecocks.

Freshman Coty Blanchard leads the Gamecock offense, batting .485 with five doubles, a triple and home run. The Leesburg, Ala., native is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak and has a .636 slugging percentage with a .551 on-base percentage.

Sam Eberle, who has hit in nine-straight games, leads the team with 26 runs batted in and is third with a .366 batting average, while Erik Underwood is second on the team with a .383 batting average.

Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field and stadium gates will open at 5 p.m. Advance tickets can be purchased at the JSU Athletic Ticket Office by calling 256-782-8499.
