Jax State Rallies for 5-4 Win Over No. 20 Auburn

JACKSONVILLE – Freshman Michael Bishop went 3-for-3 and Blake Seguin drove in the winning run in the eighth inning as Jacksonville State rallied to claim a 5-4 win over No. 20 Auburn in front of an overflow crowd at Rudy Abbott Field on Tuesday night.

Jacksonville State won its fourth straight game to improve to 15-5 on the season, while Auburn falls to 14-7 on the year.

Hunter Rivers (4-0) earned his fourth win of the season after recording a strikeout in one inning of relief. Todd Hornsby came in to pitch a scoreless ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season. Auburn's Sean Ray (1-1) got stuck with the loss after giving up a run in the eighth inning.

With the game tied at 4-4 heading to the home half of the eighth inning, Kyle Bluestein reached on a one-out double to left center. Dillon Ortman came in to pitch in relief of Ray and recorded the second out of the inning. Seguin then hit the first pitch he saw up the middle to score Bluestein for the winning run.

Auburn took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning after Kevin Patterson had a two-RBI single, and the Tigers added two more runs in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Tony Caldwell and on a RBI bunt single by Creede Simpson for a 4-0 lead.

Jax State rallied to tie the game in the seventh inning after Erik Underwood led off with a single and Bishop followed with a single through the right side. Michael Bishop then hit a single to right center to score Underwood for the Gamecocks first run of the game.

Cody Blanchard extended his hitting streak to a career-high nine games with a double to right center to score Scott Bishop as Michael Bishop also came in to score on an Auburn error. Blanchard moved to third on a wild pitch and Jake Sharrock grounded out to first base as Blanchard crossed the plate to tie the game at 4-4.

Bishop finished with a career-high three hits, while Ben Waldrip extended his hitting streak to six games with a pair of hits to lead the Gamecocks. Justin Fradejas led Auburn with three hits, while Dan Gamache and Simpson each had two hits.

Jacksonville State returns to action on Wednesday against Alabama. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The game will be carried live on the JSU Radio Network beginning at 3:45 p.m.
