
Coty Blanchard Powers Gamecocks to Sweep of Harvard

JACKSONVILLE – Freshman Coty Blanchard had six hits and scored six runs to lead Jacksonville State to a pair of wins over Harvard University on Friday. The Gamecocks claimed a 6-1 win in the opener and rallied for an 8-4 win in the night cap.
In the opener, Blanchard hit the first pitch of the game over the left field fence for his first career home run to give the Gamecocks an early 1-0 lead. JSU extended the lead in the third in the third when Jake Sharrock drove in Blanchard as the Gamecocks took a 2-0 lead.
Harvard plated an unearned run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jake McGuiggan, but JSU answered with a run in the fifth as Blanchard scored on a RBI single by Sharrock to push the lead to 3-1. JSU then scored three more runs in the seventh on a RBI triple by Sam Eberle, while Blanchard scored on an error Eric Underwood had a RBI single for the final margin.
Senior Jordan Beistline (2-0) allowed just three hits in 5 1/3 innings on the mound to earn his second win of the season. Tanner Freshour did not allow a hit over the final 3 2/3 innings to earn his first save of the season.
Blanchard and Underwood each had a pair of hits for the Gamecocks in the opener.
In the second game, Blanchard went 4-for-5 and scored a pair of runs as the Gamecocks erased an early 3-0 deficit to earn the sweep.
Casey Antley (1-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief and recorded four strikeouts to earn his first win of the year. Todd Hornsby recorded the final out to record his first save.
Harvard took a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Marcus Way walked with the bases loaded and Andrew Hatch followed with a two-RBI single to give the Crimson the early lead.
Jax State scored a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Underwood to cut the lead to 3-1, but Harvard added a run in the top of the third on a RBI single by Hatch to give the Crimson a 4-1 advantage.
Jax State battled back in the home half of the third inning to score a pair of runs on a Eberle RBI single to left field and Matt McLaughlin followed with a RBI single to left field to cut the lead to 4-3.
Jax State took the lead for good in the fifth inning on a RBI double by Blanchard, followed by an infield grounder by Stephen Bartlett to give the Gamecocks a 5-4 lead.
JSU tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth inning, thanks to a two-RBI single by Sharrock and Blake Seguin scored on a passed ball for the final margin.
Harvard was led by Hatch, who finished 4-for-4, followed by Tyler Albright, and Danny Moskovits with two hits each.
