JSU GAME NOTES
Opening Comments:
“We had a trip to Chattanooga that didn't turn out the way we planned. First, we give credit to a good Chattanooga team that was well prepared and by far the best Chattanooga team that we have played. They had a well-balanced attack with the run and pass. I think they created an advantage consistently offensively and were able to move the ball and score points. We were very disappointed in ourselves offensively, even though we got off to a fairly good start. We were keeping up and meeting the challenge of the score, but couldn't keep a rhythm in the style of play that we are going to have to adjust ourselves too. A lot of the things on offense were dictated by circumstances and penalties. I thought it was a hard fought contest on both sides. I thought where we let it get away from us was a long pass that we actually had our hands on, and an interception return for a touchdown. It was a 14-point swing that we weren't able to do anything about. It was a game that we didn't have a kicking game advantage and we really didn't create an advantage anywhere. Credit Chattanooga, but we have to be critical of ourselves and we have many capable players of making plays that didn't make them. I think we are still adapting as coaches to put the right players in the right spot, we have a continuous flow of new folks primarily due to injury. We are getting a younger core of players – which is fine because we wouldn't put them in there if we didn't think they could do the job. We really need a good week of getting back to the basics of blocking and tackling. Even under the new circumstances, I am optimistic that we can get this football team where it needs to be, but there is definitely a sense of urgency for the last couple of weeks. I don't see anything that can not be fixed as long as we stay focused to get to where we need to be.”
On Adjustments:
“There are a bunch and I guess I could say – buy a ticket. We have to do a better job of getting Calvin (Middleton) the ball more. With all the injuries and other stuff, we found that we are not getting what we need to get out of our football team. One thing you look at - are you getting the right things out of the players and out of the older players, we definitely are. We may be fixing to put another freshman or sophomore in some positions. When you play like we have the first two games, you have to decide who is going to play and how we are going to play.”
On Georgia State:
“You are talking about a program that puts enormous amount of resources into it and more than we ever could. You are talking about a school that has over 30,000 students and the resources of Atlanta, Georgia – both financially and human. To say they are two years into a football program, its a lot more than that – it's the coaching staff, they have an FBS coaching staff and have guys that can see the problems. The have not had to go through a lot of the trial and error because they had a plan and experience to know where they were going. I think they are considerably a better football team right now than last year. They have as many or more seniors and upper classmen than we do. They are probably the best looking football team that we will see outside of Kentucky. They are very physical where they need to be physical and fast where they need to be fast. They look like a team that has been doing this a long time.
