PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Jacksonville State's
Tomasz Anderson shot a school-record 15-under par to win medalist honors at the Golfweek Program Challenge as the Gamecock men finished tied for second and the women finished eighth.
The story of the tournament was the play of Anderson, a freshman from Herfordshire, England, who shot rounds of 66, 68 and 67 for a total score of 201. The 15-under par was one shot better than Matias Anselmo's total of 202 at the Raising Cane Classic in 2003.
Anderson's 15-under par is also the lowest round in the young NCAA college golf season and he is currently ranked as the No. 1 golfer in the country, according to the Golf Stat national rankings.
The Gamecock men finished with a total of 285 on Tuesday to post a 54-hole total score of 24-under par 840 to tie with South Florida. Campbell won the men's event with a score of 833.
The Gamecock women shot a 314 on Tuesday to finish with a three-day total of 916 to finish in eighth place. East Carolina won the women's event with a total of 870.
The JSU men's squad had three players finish under-par, led by Anderson (201), while
Andres Schonbaum shot a 7-under par 209 to tie for seventh place and
Tom Robson was 2-under par to tie for 23rd place.
Alfonso Otoya and Dylan Shepard each shot a 219 to tie for 37th place.
Schonbaum also recorded the first ace of the season for the Gamecocks, when he hit a hole-in-one on No. 14, a 158-yard par 3, during Tuesday's final round.
The Gamecock women's team was led by
Ornella Arrizon with a total of 227 for 28th, while Lucia Fernandez shot a 228.
Astrid Parsson shot a 230, while Lourdes Lopez finished with a 238 and Ellse Strutt carded a 252.
The JSU Women's team returns to the course on Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Betty Lou Evens Fall Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky, while the JSU men's team returns to the course on Oct. 3-4 at the Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Classic.
