JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team dug an early two-set hole it couldn't dig itself out of on Saturday, when UT Martin pulled off a 3-1 (25-20, 26-24, 17-25, 25-20) win over the Gamecocks in a history-making defensive battle at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Gamecocks (3-9, 1-1 Ohio Valley Conference) got 37 digs from sophomore Kelly Cole, the most in JSU history in a four-set match, and dug a season-high 86 balls, but it was the Skyhawks (7-5, 2-0 OVC) that came out on top in the match. UTM picked up 98 digs and held JSU to a .165 attack percentage to earn just its third win in 14 meetings in the all-time series.
Cole's record-setting performance came on a night that saw JSU honor senior Lauren Harkins in a pregame ceremony for her school record for career digs that she set earlier in the year. Also on Saturday, UTM libero Kasey Elswick set the Skyhawks' career digs mark with a team-high 33. Both Elswick and Harkins prepped at the same high school, Assumption High School in Louisville, Ky.
Cole's career night was the third-highest digs total by any player in the OVC so far this season and was the second-highest total in a four-set match, behind Eastern Kentucky's Dena Ott, who picked up 38 on Friday vs. Austin Peay. Cole led a group of three Gamecocks with double figures, with junior Hivya Leite grabbing 18 and Harkins adding 12.
After recording her first career double-double on Tuesday, Leite made it two in a row on Saturday with 10 kills to go with her 18 digs. Senior Liza Senenkova's 14 kills led the Gamecocks, while Senior Stephanie Koontz and junior Jen Meyer tossedin 12 and nine, respectively. Meyer used a .400 attack percentage to account for her nine, while Koontz hit .275.
The Gamecocks blocked 7.5 Skyhawk attacks, but UTM put back 10 on the Gamecocks' side of the net. Senenkova assisted on five blocks for JSU, while Meyer had a hand on three. Sophomore Abbey Heredia and freshman Alina Agamy split setting duties for the Gamecocks, dishing out 23 and 20 assists, respectively.
The Skyhawks got 18 kills from Ashley Doherty and got 46 assists from Jenna Miller. Miller and Allie Whimpey each recorded 16 digs in the win.
The Gamecocks go back on the road next weekend for a pair of OVC matches, beginning with a Friday showdown with Southeast Missouri at 6:30 p.m. in Cape Girardeau, Mo. JSU will wrap up the trip on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match at Murray State in Murray, Ky.
