FINAL STATS
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Sophomore Abbey Heredia and freshman Alina Agamy each recorded double-doubles for the Jacksonville State volleyball team on Friday night, but the Gamecocks couldn't battle back in a 3-1 (25-15, 27-25, 16-25, 25-23) loss at Southeast Missouri in Ohio Valley Conference play.
Heredia and Agamy, who split time at setter for the Gamecocks (3-10, 1-2 OVC), both dished over 20 assists and recorded double figures in digs for JSU, but a hot start and several comebacks by the Redhawks (5-10, 3-1 OVC) proved to be the difference in the match. After SEMO hit .406 to roll to a win in the first set, the Gamecocks led late in each of the final three sets but could only hold on in one of them.
Heredia, a native of Cary, Ill., dished 27 assists to the JSU offense and picked up a team-high 19 digs on the back row, while Bloomington, Ill., native Agamy gave out 20 assists and picked up 17 digs. The freshman also recorded three kills in the loss. They led a group of four JSU players with at least a dozen digs, with sophomore Kelly Cole adding 18 and senior Lauren Harkins pitching in 12.
On the front row for JSU, senior Stephanie Koontz hit .394 to lead the team with 16 kills. The Edwardsburg, Mich., native used 33 attacks for her offensive output and had a hand on four blocks at the net. Fellow senior middle blocker Liza Senenkova added 15 kills and three blocks for the Gamecocks, while junior Hivya Leite found the floor on seven kills.
The Redhawks got a double-double of 19 kills and 19 digs from Karlee Lursen, while 42 assists and 11 digs from setter Julie Shives made up her double-double. Emily Coon hit .348 for nine kills and blocked four JSU attacks up front.
The SEMO defense held JSU to a .152 attack percentage, while its offense mustered just a .182 clip that included the impressive first set.
The Gamecocks will wrap up the two-match road trip on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match at Murray State in Murray, Ky.
