GAME NOTES
Opening Comments:
“Obviously, we are excited about the win last week and it was Homecoming and if you don't know how important those games are – lose one. Some people come back and it's the only time that they get to see you and it leaves a memory and JSU means a lot to them and they mean a lot to JSU. I think we made a good impression Saturday and I don't think we played as good as we could, and I don't think we have played as good as we can yet this season. I give credit to Murray State's Casey Brockman, who was the offensive player of the year last year and the preseason player of the year this season. It was a hard-fought game and I thought Murray State represented themselves well. I think our quarterback is equal to any quarterback anywhere, and I thought we able to play out a scenario in this game and that has been something to our success and that is to be able to run the ball over 50 times and still get points. I thought Marques (Ivory) was able to do some things, as well and that goes back to protection. We are challenging ourselves to put all the pieces together. We questioned ourselves if we were good enough to stop the run, and we wondered if we were good at this or that. At one time or another, we have proven that we are good enough, but its weather we can acquire the maintain the focus to be a consistent football team and play a consistent game.”
“Up at Martin, it will require all of that because this is an extremely talented football team. I have said this before and all due respect to Casey Brockman, but the guy that I give more respect to in this league at quarterback is the one we are about to go face in Derek Carr. He is quite the player and the people around him are good. They have a great receiving core and some talented running backs. The challenge for us offensively, is to put points on the board and the challenge for the defense is to keep their offense from scoring. The glue between those two is the kicking game, which I think we have let fade. We have done some pieces of that well at times, and we got a critical field goal blocked last week. That is strictly a matter of focus. I am concerned that this team may not achieve its due, which is really how capable they are for the lack of ability to maintain the focus from play to play. We are going to remember November and it is time to make a statement.”
On their style of offense similar to Murray State:
“Surprisingly, they have been more like us historically, but on film it is another version of what we have seen against Murray State. They are different, but in terms of personnel, they are a spread offense. Derek Carr controls what happens on every down. We can control the style of play better in my opinion. My thinking is that you can get a rebound, and they don't get to run. It's the same thing with this offense, just go get the rebound and they won't be running up and down the floor. We have to run it and run with some consistency.”
Alan Bonner, Sr., WR
On expectations he puts on himself:
“I have expectations to come out and have the best game I can every day that I go out there. If there are times that I have the chance to make the big play and if I don't make it, I have to push through it and make the next play. I try to keep my head focused and go make plays.”
Marques Ivory, Sr. QB
On his expectations:
“I just feel like playing quarterback, I have a lot of the responsibility and I feel like I have the ability to live up to the expectations from a quarterback. We hold ourselves to a higher standard because we feel like if it is third and seven, we will get that every time. Sometimes you just have to throw the ball away and the defense will stop them.”
Odie Rush, Sr. OL
On limiting sacks this season:
“I hate when we give up a sack and we know it shouldn't happen again. We take a lot of pride in knowing that we have not given up many sacks this season.”
