
UT San Antonio Tops JSU Women's Tennis

BIRMINGHAM – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the University of Texas at San Antonio on Friday in a neutral site match played at Samford University.
The loss drops the Gamecocks to 3-4 on the season, while UTSA improved to 5-1 on the season.
The Roadrunners jumped on the scoreboard early by sweeping all three doubles positions. At No. 1, JSU's tandem of Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima fell to UTSA's duo of Isabelle Jonsson and Stefanie Peana, 8-2. Jax State's Rafaela Wenzel and Zoe Bizinos were edged by the Roadrunners' pairing of Vivian Carrillo and Micaela Silva, 8-6. UTSA completed the sweep at No. 3 after it's duo of Natalie Hand and Kavya Menon topped JSU's Danielle Kerindi and Kelly Tomlin, 8-5.
In singles play, each match was highly contested, but went UTSA's way in five of the six matches. JSU's lone point came at No. 6 as Bizinos, playing under the weather, turned in a 6-3, 7-5 win over Irene Gonzalez. Guasti and UTSA's Stefanie Peana battled in straight sets before Peana posted a 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 1. Lima dropped a straight sets decision to Jonsson, 6-4, 7-5. UTSA's Silva claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Wenzel at No. 4.
JSU returns to the courts on Wednesday, Feb. 29 as both squads travel to Chattanooga for a 1:30 p.m. duel with the Mocs of Chattanooga.
