Golden Eagles Too Much For Gamecocks in OVC Hoops

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE – Tennessee Tech proved too much for the Jacksonville State men's basketball team on Saturday, when the Golden Eagles got out of Pete Mathews Coliseum with a 76-68 win that snapped the Gamecocks' four-game conference winning streak.

The Gamecocks (10-16, 5-7 Ohio Valley Conference) exchanged blows for the first few minutes, but the Golden Eagles (16-9, 8-4 OVC) created just enough separation and held off JSU the rest of the way. The loss snapped JSU's longest conference win streak since joining the league in 2003-04 and evened the season series, avenging a 63-62 JSU win in Cookeville, Tenn., last month.

Junior Tarvin Gaines scored 19 points to lead a pair of Gamecocks in double figures. The West Memphis, Ark., native was 8-for-14 from the floor, scoring 14 points in the first half. He also blocked three shots and grabbed five boards.

Sophomore Brian Williams added 18 points but got most of his in the second half. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native struggled from the floor, making just six of his 20 attempts and going 4-for-12 from beyond the 3-point line. He also pulled in five boards, a career high, and dished three assists.

Sophomore Nick Cook led the Gamecocks with eight boards, while the Hattiesburg, Miss., native distributed five assists from the post. Freshman Darion Rackley tossed six assists and scored seven points.

TTU got most of its offensive production from two players, as Jud Dillard and Kevin Murphy combined for 59 of the Golden Eagles' 76 points. Dillard notched his second double-double of the season against JSU with 26 points and 12 boards on a night that saw him go 9-for-13 from the floor. Murphy added 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting after missing his first four attempts of the night.

Guard Zac Swansey, one of the nation's top assists men, dished 11 assists and grabbed three steals.

The Gamecocks will return to action on Wednesday, when they face Morehead State on the road. The game in Morehead, Ky., is slated to tip at 6 p.m. CT and will be carried live on the Gamecock Sports Network.
