TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Jacksonville State track and field team turned in a solid opening day at the prestigious Florida State Relays on Friday.
The third day of competition a the FSU Relays was delayed 90 minutes due to lightning, which pushed back the day's event into the late night evening hours.
Highlighting Friday's JSU contingent was the 4x100 meter relay squad. The quartet won the event with a mark of 45.27. Sophomore Ebonie Cury led the squad in the first leg, followed by junior
India Boyd and sophomore
Shamira Barrett. Junior
Laveeta Oliver was the anchor of the team. JSU bested Morgan State, South Florida and Florida A&M.
Freshman
Giselle Slotboom continues to paste her name throughout the JSU records. On Friday, the Sassenheim, The Netherlands-native won the event with a time of 10:37.82. The second place-finisher crossed the line in 11:03.82. Slotboom shattered the program's top mark in the event, which was 11:18.57, held by Megan Ziarek in 2008.
In the 10,000 meter run,
Ericka Stam and
Ryan Green finished one-two with times of 38:40.50 and 40:46.08 respectively.
Natasha Sturkie posted a fourth-place finish in the 400 meter dash after crossing the finish line in 55.60.
Jax State had three top-10 finishers in the javelin throw, led by
Andrea Hoke's fifth-place mark. Hoke tallied a toss of 130-08.
Taylor Prince claimed sixth with a mark of 124-03.
Maribeth Williams had a throw of 120-10 for eighth place.
