BIRMINGHAM – The Jax State Track & Field team had an eventful season opener on Friday, taking home three individual event wins alongside setting a new program record in the 60m hurdles at the Icebreaker Invitational.
Amber Bailey took home first place in the 400m with a time of 55.70, the fifth best mark in school history while
Maddyn Conn and Faith Kurgoi took home first in the mile and 3000m events respectively.
Freshman
Cheyenne Hill also managed a new program best in the 60m hurdles in her Jax State debut. The Douglasville, Ga. native finished with a blistering time of 8.61 seconds, placing her third in the event.
Overall, Jax State finished with eight top 10 marks in program history, including six being set by freshmen.
Tierra Agee,
Ella-Grace Edwards,
Mercy Jebet and
Theresa Lukas joined Kurgoi and Hill in setting program top 10 marks as freshmen.
Bailey also set the fifth best mark in school history in the 200m, finishing with a sub-25-second finish.
Emma Drinkard finished just two seconds behind Bailey in the 400m, taking home fourth place while
Lindsay Fletcher captured fourth in the one mile, three spots behind Conn.
Rania Gabriela Yousef Moreno also captured a top five placement, earning fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:20.49.
Three Gamecocks finished in the top five of the 3000m, including Kurgoi, Jebet and
Naum Kibiwott.
Jax State resumes its indoor season on Jan. 16 at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham.
