Gamecock Hoops Adds Memphis Prep Guard Anderson

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State men's basketball coach James Green has announced the signing of Memphis point guard Alex Anderson, who will join the Gamecocks in the fall.

Anderson, a 5-foot-10 guard from Memphis' East High School, is a true point guard that led his team to the 2012 AAA State Championship in Tennessee, the Mustangs' first state title since 1996.  He signed a National Letter of Intent during the first part of the signing period.

"Alex is a true point guard who has a team-first mentality,” Green said. “That showed in his senior season, when he led his team to a state championship. He is an outstanding leader and the ultimate student-athlete, whose accomplishments and work ethic will transition well into our program at Jacksonville State.”

Anderson played for head coach Sam Bachelor at East High School, where he averaged 12.8 points and 6.5 assists per game as a senior in 2011-12. A 52 percent shooter from the floor and 48 percent shooter from behind the 3-point line, he also picked up 2.4 steals per game on the defensive end and averaged 2.4 rebounds per contest.

As a junior for the Mustangs, he averaged 13.3 points and 5.1 assists per game. He entered his senior season ranked as one of the top 50 prep players in the state of Tennessee. He has been described as a speedy point guard with excellent court vision and passing skills.

Anderson is the first signee for the Gamecocks in the spring signing period and will join a roster that earned a spot in the OVC Tournament and defeated preseason favorite Austin Peay in the first round. JSU had just two players on that conference tournament team that had any Division I experience before the season and they return each player on the roster.
