JSU GAME NOTES
Opening Comments:
“We have a challenging week this week because we left the last game at Eastern Kentucky not feeling good about our ability to run the ball or stop the run and control turnovers, which are the benchmarks that we use for qualifying ourselves as a championship contender. We had a minus-four turnover differential and we gave up 300 yards rushing and struggled to run the ball effectively ourselves, which led to having an inconsistent offense. Defensively, we know we are young, but it would not be only to say the issue with us giving up so many rushing yards. The issue was more the intentness, competitiveness and having a mental edge when it comes to playing physical. That is something that you can get at practice, but it also has more to do with a mental approach you take once you get past practice and the time leading up to the game. We did play a very physical and mature offensive line that was very intent and knew exactly what their mission was and their (EKU) offensive line pretty much controlled the football game. Offensively for us, we had DaMarcus James who had some quality runs throughout the game, and we had our moments of moving the ball, but there was no consistency. With the four turnovers, it kept us at a scoring margin that we didn't really approach in being competitive after the first quarter. The challenge is to get our edge back and take an approach in practice, really on the defensive line that we are going to have some people competing for their playing time. I think we have some young people that can rise up and do this. DiMetrio (Tyson) is the anchor on that side. We have to grow into a more physical mindset when we step up and play.”
On Southeast Missouri State:
“Southeast Missouri is going to give us an equal challenge. They are going to come in here and try to do the same thing that Eastern Kentucky, except they have more of a perimeter balance. They throw the ball, but they use the perimeter effectively, which makes it tougher to be in every gap all the time. We are going to simplify, to some degree, to make sure that we can contend and react properly to all the challenges that Southeast Missouri represents. On the other side of the ball, we know who we are and we have old enough players there. It's just a matter of doing what we do. We understand that we have running backs that can make plays and we have linemen that can make blocks, but that has to happen together. When that happens, you can control the line of scrimmage well enough to throw the football. We know that we can throw it and catch it. The bottom line this week is that it gets back to the line of scrimmage and developing the proper mindset to play SEMO, who is going to be a line of scrimmage football team. SEMO also has 16 takeaways in three football games and they are doing that by being sound.”
“It all starts at quarterback with them and they lost an outstanding quarterback, who graduated last year. They came in behind him with one they had been grooming and he tore an ACL. They are down to a young player that has been impressive. He is a guy that can throw ball. They picked him because of his athleticism and his toughness. Their ability to get the ball inside and outside is predicated on getting the ball inside. They are very disciplined on both sides of the ball.”
On making position changes:
“We are moving Jermaine Hough to a starting position. We knew when we signed Jermaine (Hough), he was a guy that we were going to fast-track and its finally time for him to show up and play with his competitiveness. We have to play better defense to be competitive in this league. Offensively, we have to get back on track and we got off track because we did not have a running game.”
DiMetrio Tyson, Sr. DL
Preparing for this week
“I feel like defensively, I let the defense down because I am the captain of the defense and I didn't rally the team when it needed it the most. That was last week, and this week we are moving forward from there. We know we have a hard challenge with SEMO. I am going to do a better job of getting this defense ready to play this week. Being physical is not something you can teach or drill, it's just something you have bring every day.”
Marques Ivory, Sr. QB
On the getting the offense back on track
“We need to get back to being consistent because that was our biggest problem last week. It starts with the running game because everything is based off of the run. We have to make sure as leaders that the sense of urgency is always up.”
On Southeast Missouri State:
“They are very discipline and they don't do a whole lot on defense unless they have changed some things. They are always in the spots that they are suppose to be.”
