Mitchem Keys Run and 76-69 Gamecocks Win at AAMU

Box Score

HUNTSVILLE – Freshman Undre Mitchem scored a career-high 21 points and keyed a second-half run that propelled the Jacksonville State men's basketball team to a 76-69 road win over Alabama A&M on Monday.

The 6-foot-2 guard from Leesburg, Fla., went 7-for-11 from the floor and scored the first five points of a 15-0 run that turned a seven-point lead for the Bulldogs (1-4) into an eight-point lead the Gamecocks (2-5) wouldn't relinquish.

Fresh off a 17-point performance in a Friday win over Dalton State, Mitchem put the team on his back at a key stretch for the second-straight game. He led four JSU players in double figures with his big night from the floor.

Senior Brian Williams scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and dished four assists in another push in the Gamecock record books. After getting to the 1,000-point mark earlier this season, he ran his career assists total to 280 on Monday night to pass Anthony Kingston for 10th place on the school's career assists list. He trails Scott Watson in ninth by one.

Junior D.J. Felder scored 10 in the first half and finished with 14, while junior Darion Rackley added 11 and junior Nick Cook eight. Cook had eight rebounds, while junior Jamal Hunter led the way with nine. JSU won the battle on the glass, 36-27.

AAMU got 20 points from Brandon Ellis, but only three came in the second half. Leading scorer Jeremy Crutcher managed just four in the game, while Demarquelle Tabb and Green Hill each scored 14 in the loss.

The two teams exchanged blows throughout the first half, one that saw AAMU build its largest lead at 4-0 and the Gamecocks pull out to their largest late at 28-23. In all, the first 20 minutes saw four lead changes and five ties, the last being the 31-31 score at the half.

Ellis was the story for the Bulldogs, going 8-for-9 while the rest of his team went 6-for-20 to score 17 points in the first 20 minutes. Felder's 10 points came on a 5-for-7 first half from the field and led the Gamecocks, while Mitchem tossed in eight points.

After the two exchanged buckets to start the second half, a Jose Long three and a Crutcher drive gave the Bulldogs a 40-35 lead, their largest of the night by the 15:47 mark of the second half. They stretched it to 42-35 before a Mitchem triple stopped the 7-0 run.

Mitchem made the next bucket from beyond the arc at the left wing to cut it to a point and set up a 15-0 run that gave the Gamecocks a 50-42 lead with just under 12 minutes to play. The Bulldogs cut it to two at 56-54, but Mitchem stepped up again.

The freshman knocked down a pull-up jumper from about 10 feet and then drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to push the Gamecocks' lead back to seven with just under five minutes to play at 61-54.

The Bulldogs kept it within six until 1:06 to play, when a Rackley three fell as the shot clock expired gave JSU a 70-61 lead.

JSU held strong the rest of the way, converting on 15-of-19 free throw attempts in the second half to help put the game on ice.

The Gamecocks will return home for their final game before Thanksgiving on Wednesday, a 12 p.m. matinee vs. Fort Valley State at Pete Mathews Coliseum. As always, children ages 18 and under get in free to all JSU home games.
