PADUCAH, Ky. – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team will have a chance for its second Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday after disposing Belmont, 4-1, in the semifinals on Saturday morning at the Heflin Tennis Center.
The Gamecock women will face top-seeded Eastern Kentucky on Sunday at 10 a.m. The winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. EKU, who won the regular season crown after posting an unblemished mark of 10-0 in the OVC, turned back Eastern Illinois on Saturday, 4-1.
JSU had to come back from dropping the doubles point in the third and deciding match at No. 3. The Red and White tandem of Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima needed little time to oust their opposition from BU. They turned in an 8-2 win over BU's Sandra Kancheva and Nikki Maciel. After the Bruins took court No. 2 to even doubles at 1-all, it came down to JSU's pairing of Zoe Bizinos and Danielle Kerindi. Bizinos and Kerindi dropped a hard fought 8-6 match to BU's Carolyn Caire and Fabiana Mersan.
The Gamecocks regrouped for singles play and posted four consecutive wins to clinch the match. Guasti blanked Maciel 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 to even the match at 1-all. Senior Raphaela Lima followed right behind Guasti with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Catherine Holliday.
JSU took a commanding 3-1 lead over the Bruins after freshman Olivia Nguyen registered a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Caire. Sophomore Bizinos rallied after tough doubles match to clinch the fourth-and-deciding point at No. 4. Bizinos won the opening set 6-2 over Mersan and closed out in the second set by the identical score.
