TUSCALOOSA – Jacksonville State junior
Destany McLin knocked down the game-winning basket with three seconds left to take down in-state foe and Southeastern Conference member Alabama, 64-62, on the Crimson Tide's home floor on Tuesday night.
The win is the second over an SEC program for Jax State and the first since it topped the other power five conference school in the Yellowhammer State, Auburn in 2005. After a narrow setback at Texas Tech to open the season and Tuesday's victory, JSU stands at 1-1 as it heads in to the home opener on Saturday against New Orleans at 2 p.m.
After JSU nursed a three-point, 62-59 lead with 24 seconds left, UA's Hannah Cook sank a three pointer to draw even for the eighth time to set up the game-winning shot by McLin.
JSU started strong in in-state affair as it raced out to a nine-point, 22-13 lead after sophomore guard
Kelly Naughton drilled her first career three-pointer at the 7:48 mark of the contest. The Gamecocks posted a solid first 20 minutes from behind the three-point arc as they connected on 6-of-13 from long range to spark the 32-point first half. Jax State would finish the game hitting 9-of-21 from three-point range, the most since the Red and White hit 10 against Austin Peay in January of 2013.
Senior
Candace Morton, who finished in double figures for the 31
st time in the last 34 games, gave JSU a ten-point, 28-18 lead on a trey with 3:44 left in the half. JSU would take a 32-22 lead in to the halftime break.
JSU Head Coach
Rick Pietri knew the Crimson Tide would make a run at his club in the second half and he was spot on. UA's 40 point second-half effort was sparked by Cook's 18 points and Ashley Williams 13 of her final 26 points. JSU extended its lead out to as many as 12 on two occasions in the second half, with the second 12-point lead coming at 16:30 left to play. The Crimson Tide began its surge from the point on as it went on a 17-5 run over a span of six minutes to knot the game at 42-all at the 10:20 mark and erased the JSU lead with a pair of free throws by Cook.
From that point, the contest went back and forth until the final buzzer. UA's final lead of the game came at 51-50 on a Williams bucket with 4:53 left to play. JSU quickly responded on the other end with a key three-point basket by Morton.
McLin, along with
Courtney Strain, led a trio of Gamecocks in double figure scoring. The combo finished with 14 points each, while Morton tacked on 13 points. Sophomore Brianna Benson added nine points on three treys, while Naughton turned in six points.
As a team, JSU finished the night shooting 42.6 percent and 40 percent from behind the arc. UA had decisive advantage at the free throw line, knocking down 17-of-32 at the line. JSU was sent to the free throw line just six times.
For the Tide, Williams tallied a game-high 26 points and one rebound shy of a double-double. Briana Hutchen pulled down 10 rebounds for UA.
