JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team will head in to the Thanksgiving break with a 3-1 record for the first time since the 2006-07 season after turning back Wofford, 70-55, on Tuesday at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Gamecocks three-game winning streak includes a road win last Tuesday at in0state rival Alabama and back-to-back home wins over New Orleans and the Terriers of WC. The Terriers fell to 1-3 on the young season.
The Jax State win was fueled by a 12-0 scoring run that began just under the seven minute-mark and pushed JSU's lead out to 14 points with 4:14 left in the contest. The run was sparked by senior
Candace Morton, who with 14 points. The Lexington, Kentucky-native scored 12 of her final tally in the second half. She has now scored in double figures in 33 of the last 36 games and now just needs another double figure outing at Central Arkansas on Saturday to reach 1,000 career points.
After a back-and-forth start to the contest, the Gamecocks opened their advantage out to as many as eight points twice last in the second half. Sophomore
Briana Benson highlighted the opening 20 minutes with nine of her team-high 17 points off the bench. Benson, from Jonesboro, Georgia, knocked down two of her four three-point baskets in the first 20 minutes. The four treys was a season-high for Benson and one off of her career high.
The Terriers trimmed the JSU lead down to 26-23 at the intermission. The Gamecocks took advantage of their inside presence by scoring 16 points in the paint in the first half and added 18 points after the halftime break. The Terriers, who averaged over 20 turnovers per game coming in to the contest, finished with 27 on the night, which led to 36 points on the other end for JSU.
JSU started the second half strong by extending the lead out to double digits for the first time after
Destany McLin capped off a 10-3 scoring run at the 16:24 mark of the half. The Terriers started gnawing at the deficit as they responded with a run of their own. After a Benson three-point basket with 14:01 left to play, WC went on a 10-2 run to equalize at 43-all on a pair of free throws by Jordan Frazier with 10:41 on the game clock. JSU quickly regained the lead after a jumper by
Courtney Strain on the next trip down the floor. JSU would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way as WC stayed within two possessions until the Gamecocks' run to seal the win. Jax State had its largest lead of 18 points with just 18 seconds left before the Terriers' final basket.
JSU finished the night shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor (27-of-55) thanks to a 17-of-28 second half outing, while limiting WC to just 39 percent shooting.
McLin was the third Gamecock to finish in double figures in the scoring column as she added 10 points. Senior
Miranda Cantrell turned in eight points and six rebounds. The JSU bench contributed 32 points in the contest. Freshman
Leah Strain had her best night of her young Gamecock career with eight points in nine minutes.
Fraizer, who came off the bench for Wofford tallied a game-high 18 points. Kentra Washington chipped in 12 points in the loss.
The Gamecocks will enjoy Thanksgiving on Thursday before making the trek to Conway, Ark. on Friday for a 12 p.m. tip off with the Sugar Bears of UCA.
