The Gamecocks, who went in to the Christmas break on a two-game winning streak after taking down Charleston Southern and East Tennessee State on back-to-back days in the UNC Wilimington Christmas Invitational, looks to remain perfect at home and extend a five-game winning streak at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Jax State enters the final tune up before Ohio Valley Conference play begins on Thursday with an 8-3 overall mark. The eight wins are the most by this point in the season since the 1990-91 season. The 1990-91 club didn't record its eighth win of the season until Jan. 5, 1991. Mercer finished up the pre-holiday slate with an even 6-6 mark and have dropped the last three outings prior to Christmas. The Bears have suffered consecutive losses to Kennesaw State and Belmont at home before dropping a 72-59 road decision at College of Charleston on Dec. 21.
The 2014 calendar year has been an impressive 12 months as Jax State has won 19 of its 30 games since January, 1, 2014. A win over the Bears will be the 20th in the calendar year and the 12th in the last 13 games at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Gamecocks and Bears, two former conference rivals, will be meeting for the 22nd time tonight and for the third year in a row. MU holds a 13-8 lead in the all-time series and has won the last five encounters dating back to the 2002 season. The Bears won their fifth straight over Jax State last season, 60-54, at Pete Mathews Coliseum. JSU's last win over the Bears was a 62-60 victory in Jacksonville on Feb. 24, 2001.
