
Cougars Hold Off Gamecocks for 7-6 Win

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Skylerss Geissinger went 3-for-4 to lead SIU-Edwardsville to a 7-6 win over Jacksonville State in the opening game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series on Friday evening.
P.J. Schuster (1-0) earned his first win of the season after recording four strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of relief, while Connor Metcalf (1-1) got stuck with the loss for the Gamecocks.
SIUE (5-9, 3-1) jumped out to an early lead after scoring two runs in the first inning on a RBI single by Geissinger and Alec Saikal, but the Gamecocks (10-7, 3-1) trimmed the lead in the top of the second.
Andrew Bishop reached on a Cougar error and came around to score after Stephen Bartlett singled to left field to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Cougars pushed the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second after Verschoore hit a one-out triple and scored on Chase Green's double to right field. SIUE extended the lead to 5-1 in the third after Saikal had a RBI single and Geissinger scored on a sacrifice fly.
Jax State got one run back in the fourth on a RBI double by Bartlett, and then tied the game in the fifth inning after pushing across three more runs.
Michael Bishop scored on Eddie Mora-Loera's RBI double, and then later came in to score on Ryan Sebra's sacrifice fly. Andrew Bishop followed with a two-out RBI double to right field to score Paschal Petrongolo and tie the game at 5-5.
SIUE took a 6-5 lead in the sixth after Jacob Stewart scored on Chase Green's RBI double in the sixth inning, but the Gamecocks battled back to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning after Tyler Gamble led off with a double and scored on Gavin Golsan's sacrifice fly to make the score 6-6.
The Cougars scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning after Verschoore was able to score on a Gamecock wild pitch for the final margin.
Bartlett finished with three hits, while Mora-Loera, Gamble, Andrew Bishop and Michael Bishop each had two hits to lead the Gamecocks.
The two teams will play a double-header on Saturday in an attempt to avoid heavy rains that are forecast for the area on Sunday. The first game will begin at 1 p.m., followed immediately by the second game. Both games can be heard on the JSU Radio Network.
