MOREHEAD, Ky. – Blaine Tanner had four hits and drove in three runs to lead Morehead State to a 16-7 win over Jacksonville State in the first game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series on Thursday evening.
Jacksonville State (29-23, 17-11 OVC) remained tied for second place in the OVC after Belmont defeated Tennessee Tech as the two teams battle for a bye in next week's OVC Tournament. Morehead State improved to 27-25 and 15-13 in the league.
Luke Humphreys (6-6) scattered five hits and had four strikeouts in five innings to pick up the win for the Eagles, while Zachary Fowler (6-6) got stuck with the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in just 2 2/3 inning for the Gamecocks.
Morehead State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Gamecocks battled to cut the lead to 3-2 after scoring two runs in the second inning on a two-run home run by Tyler Gamble.
The Eagles then scored two runs in the home half of the second and then pushed across six runs in the third inning to build an 11-2 lead and take control of the game. Morehead added two more runs in the fourth inning after Tanner drove in two runs with a double to push the lead to 13-2.
Jax State got two of the runs back in the fifth inning after Griff Gordon slugged a two-run home run, and Ryan Sebra added another two-run home run in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 13-6.
The Eagles answered with two in the bottom of the seventh to build a 15-6 lead, but Gamble hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, his second of the game, to make the score 15-7. MSU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.
Gordon had three hits and drove in two runs, while Gamble hit a pair of home runs to drive in three more runs to lead the Gamecocks. Morehead State was led by Tanner's four hits and Brandon Rawe had three as the Eagles finished with 17 hits in the game.
