MOREHEAD, Ky. – Brandon Rawe had three hits and Robby Spencer hit the go-ahead home run in the seventh inning as Morehead State claimed a 12-10 win over Jacksonville State to win the series on Saturday afternoon.
Jacksonville State finished the regular-season tied for second in the OVC, but will be the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Eastern Illinois on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the OVC Baseball Tournament.
Matt Ellenbest (2-2) allowed just two hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win for the Eagles, while Adam Polk (4-4) gave up three runs on four hits to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks .
Morehead State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, but the Gamecocks answered with five runs in the third inning to take the lead. Griff Gordon, Ryan Sebra and Tyler Gamble each drove in a run, while Paschal Petrongolo dorve in two more runs with his seventh triple of the season to give JSU a 5-3 lead.
Eddie Mora-Loera hit a solo home run in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-3, but the Eagles battled in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-5 after Rawe and Kane Sweeney each drove in a run.
Jax State pushed the lead to 8-5 in the top of the fifth inning after Michael Bishop drew a bases loaded walk and Stephen Bartlett scored on a sacrifice fly.
Morehead State took the lead in the home half of the fifth inning after pushing across four runs, highlighted by two-RBI double by Chris Robinson as the Eagles took a 9-8 lead.
Jax State tied the game at 9-9 in the sixth inning after Petrongolo scored on a sacrifice fly, but the Eagles took the lead for good in the seventh inning after Spencer hit a solo home run and Bobby Burns drove in two more runs for a 12-9 lead.
Petrongolo hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, but the Gamecocks could get no closer. Petrongolo led the Gamecocks with four this and three RBI, while Bishop had three hits and Sebra added two more hits to lead the Gamecocks' 16-hit attack.
Jacksonville State makes its 11th straight appearance in next week's OVC Tournament, making the field every year since joining the league in 2004.
