MURRAY, Ky. – For the fourth time in the last five outings, the Jacksonville State soccer team went extra time as it took Ohio Valley Conference frontrunner Murray State to overtime before falling 1-0 in the 94
th minute on Friday afternoon at MSU's Cutchin Field.
The loss was JSU's third in the four overtime matches during the five-match stretch and it made a dent in the program's chances of making a third consecutive trip to the OVC Tournament. The Gamecocks fell to 5-11-1 overall and 2-6 in OVC play. Jax State has two matches remaining on the 2016 docket with Sunday's matinee contest at Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tennessee. JSU closes out the regular season at home on Thursday, October 27, hosting Belmont. The Racers (7-4-3) remained unbeaten (6-0-2) in the league and with the win inched closer to securing their second consecutive regular season title and the right to host the semifinals and championship matches of the 2016 OVC Tournament.
MSU's Taylor Richerson broke up the scoreless standoff with her fourth goal of the season in the 94
th minute. Richerson drilled the Racer's 16
th and final shot from near the top of the box and sending it over Gamecock keeper
Caroline Robinson for the game winner. The Racers held an 11 shot advantage over JSU in the contest at 16-5. The Gamecocks registered four of their five shots in the opening half. JSU thwarted many Racer chances throughout the contest as MSU had 10 shots on goal, led by Richerson. JSU's Robinson collected eight saves in the match, while MSU's Alex Steigerwald posted four in the win. The Gamecocks also denied the Racers' 10 corner kick opportunities, while JSU was not credited with a corner kick attempt.
